What is Mount Batur?

Mount Batur is an active volcano located in the central highlands of Bali, standing at 1,717 meters above sea level. It sits within a large caldera alongside Lake Batur, a significant feature formed by ancient volcanic eruptions.

The volcano has a history of eruptions, with notable activities recorded in the 20th century. It is of great significance to the Balinese culture, revered as a sacred site and integral to local agricultural practices due to its fertile volcanic soil. Historically, Mount Batur is revered in Balinese culture, linked to the island's mythological and religious practices. It is considered sacred, housing the powerful deity Dewi Danu, the goddess of Lake Batur.

Key Mount Batur eruptions

  • 1849 Eruption: This significant eruption marked one of the earliest well-documented events of volcanic activity at Mount Batur, attracting attention to its potential impact on the surrounding area.
  • 1917 Eruption: This eruption was particularly devastating, destroying numerous villages around the volcano's base and resulting in many fatalities.
  • 1926 Eruption: Caused the lava to flow into Batur village, leading to the village's relocation to a higher, safer area.
  • 1963 Eruption: Occurred simultaneously with the eruption of Mount Agung, another significant volcano in Bali, causing considerable changes to the local environment and affecting nearby populations.

Best time to go on a Mount Batur tour

The best time to visit Mount Batur is during the dry season, which runs from April to October in Bali. During these months, the weather is generally clearer and less rainy, making it more suitable for trekking and enjoying panoramic views from the summit. You could opt for a sunrise trek; though it does start in the early hours of the day, you’ll be treated to spectacular views and a cooler temperature for climbing.

That said, if you want a bit of an adventure, visit Mount Batur during the wet season, between October and March. A trek might be challenging during this season with the rains making the trail a little slippery, but the lush green views from the summit would assuredly make it worthwhile!

Things to know before you book a Mount Batur tour

  • If you’re unsure about being able to make the trek, don’t worry! There are also jeep tours available that would be perfect for you.
  • Jeep tours and guided treks both offer transfers from these regions: Denpasar Ubud, Sanur, Seminyak, Canggu, Legian, Kuta, Nusa Dua, and Jimbaran.
  • If you opt for a sunrise tour, your journey will start at 1 am, and at 2.30 am if you choose to trek. A jeep tour starts later, anytime between 2.30 and 4 am, depending on where you need to be picked up from.
  • Along with your Mount Batur tour, you can also take a dip in the hot springs on your way back. The hot springs are especially refreshing if you’ve chosen to trek up the mountain.
  • Tickets include breakfast at the summit. Boiled eggs and a sandwich cooked on the volcanic steam will be served.
  • Your tour guide will help you learn more about the mountain and its significance and guide you safely up the mountain.

Taking drones on your Mount Batur tour

Luckily, the rules surrounding drones are not very strict in Bali. But there are rules, of course, that you must follow if you want to shoot with a drone in Bali (home to Mount Batur) that would depend on three factors: your age, the weight of your drone and the purpose of your shoot.

There are two categories you should know about:

  1. Category 1: Shooting for recreational purposes such as entertainment, sport, or a hobby.
  2. Category 2: Shooting for professional purposes such as making feature films or news.
    If you fall in Category 1, are over 18 years of age, and are carrying a drone that weighs less than a kilo, then you’re golden!
  • If you fall under Category 2
  • If your drone weighs more than 2 kilos, even if you’re in Category 1, you must be over 20 years of age.

To get your drone permits, contact the Directorate General of Civil Aviation or AirNav. You’ll need insurance coverage and a letter of purpose. A pilot’s license is recommended, but not mandatory.

  • Don’t fly above 500 feet off the ground
  • Stay away from private property
  • Keep the speed below 161 kmph
  • Don’t fly your drone during the night
  • Stay away from military and airspace
  • Steer clear of crowds
